Sierra Nueva War

The Sierra Nueva war is low-intensity brush war between the Incorporate GenDiver and the native population of the Sierra Nueva Cluster. The conflict is as much about Long John and the exploitation of Poseidon's natural resources, as it is about the preservation of the way of life and rights of the natives.

Native sentiment is such that GenDiver's presence in the area is seen as a threat to the native way of life.

The GEO is, as always, caught in the middle between sympathy for the natives' stance and its duty to protect the interests of one of its member states.

Despite the relatively low-level of conflict in the area, the issue has become much publicised in the media, leading to polarisation of opinion throughout greater Poseidon with one side or the other.

The war has, since the first incident in 2190, developed into a tit-for-tat series of attacks and counter attacks.

The Baffin Island settlement and the GenDiver company town of Santa Elena are at the center of the conflict, acting as command centres for the two main combatants.

The continuing escalation of violence within the region, has led to the establishment of a GEO Military base in the region Fort Solitude, also known as Crusoe Island Military Base

The GEO's role as a peacekeeper is complicated by the careful management of GenDiver reprisal attacks on the natives of the region. GenDiver executives have been careful to remain within the realms of defending the sovereignty of an Independent State as guaranteed by the GEO Charter.

Native attacks are thought to be directed, at least in part by the orca Bataku, at the behest of the bottlenose dolphin spiritual leader, Prophet.
