The Blight

Originating from an attempt by the Vietnamese government to counteract disease in rice crops, the Blight, or Fischer Virus turned out to be mankind's greatest disaster. The Fischer Virus, released in 2090, mutated, attacking not only the parasitic infection of rice crops, but the crop itself. Further mutation of the Virus targetted many staple food crops worldwide, causing catastrophic crop failures. The resulting famines caused the deaths (directly or indirectly) of some 5.7 billion people and changed the sociopolitical face of the Earth for the forseeable future.
