The final successor to the laser disk, dataspikes are small cylinders with a blunt, optical grade plastic point on one end. Dataspikes can store up to one terabyte of information. This is enough storage to hold 50,000 fully illustrated encyclopaedia volumes. Dataspikes contains a core of light-sensitive protein, and data is stored by configuring the proteins with lasers of different colours. Some brands even have a tiny readout that automatically displays the primary directory name or the spike ID. Spikes are resistant to moderate temperatures and magnetic fields and are remarkably durable.
