A CICADA (originally the acronym of Cybernetic Interactive Cetacean Activity Drone Accessory; like "radar" and "scuba" the term is becoming generic, but is still capitalized) is a specific style and niche of remote developed to let cetaceans work around the limits of being marine mammals with no hands.
CICADA designs vary, but generally involve all the following features:
- A streamlined, self-propelled aquatic sled, controlled by echolocated sonic commands.
- At least one retractable manipulator limb built into the sled itself.
- An auxiliary remote (typically a saucer-shaped VTOL) controlled by uplinked sonic trode or an antenna raised from the sled. Basic aux remotes have 360° holo visual, a radar transceiver, translation software, and a voice synthesizer for making noises at humans.
Additional features, up to and including torpedo and missile tubes on military CICADAs, vary depending on make, model, and price tag.
