There are four versions of the Blue Planet Roleplaying Game:

Version 1 was published by Biohazard. Version 2 was published by Fantasy Flight Games. GURPS Blue Planet was published by Steve Jackson Games. Recontact will be published by Biohazard. This article focus on the two first an their differences.

There are errata for version 1 and version 2.

Version 1

This was, as the name implies, the first version of the game and was published in 1997 and had a rather complex rules system, esp. for combat.

The first public note about the existence of Blue Planet was made in the USENET group rec.games.frp.misc in the thread Blue Planet (Was: "Who is making new RPGs these days?") (scroll down a little to find the thread).

Version 2

In 2000 was Version 2 published in co-operation with Fantasy Flight Games and it was based on the new rules system named Synergy. The rules system shares almost no similarities and Synergy has some similarities with White Wolf's skill resolution system made famous by Vampire et al: Skill plus attribute makes up a target number which the player should roll below by a number of dices.

The background is the same but the system has been replaced.

GURPS

Steve Jackson Games has published a adaption of the Blue Planet universe to its GURPS roleplaying game, amply named GURPS Blue Planet. This Wiki does not necessarily cover their version, which is a rules adaption, the setting is still the same. There is an official errata for GURPS Blue Planet.

Recontact (version 3)

A new version of Blue Planet will be released in 2021 or 2022. It is being back by a Kickstarter campaign and there is a quickstart version of the new edition available for free.
